Capital Project Manager
The Capital Project Manager manages capital projects from advanced planning through the various phases of the design process and through construction and closeout.
Responsibilities- Establish and manage project budget and schedule.
- Oversee the designer and CMR selection process and manage the bid process.
- Review design and bid documents prepared by outside consultants for constructability and maintainability and solicit feedback from other University stakeholders.
- Prepare project status reports for University administration and attend project status/review meetings.
- Assist in preparing or providing input to the development of general construction and renovation capital improvement projects.
- Act as liaison between University stakeholders and design and construction team.
- Position requires considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and theories of construction and engineering, architecture, extensive knowledge of materials, soils, foundations, construction techniques, project management and of the codes, laws and ordinances pertaining to the construction and renovation of buildings and other facilities.
- Knowledge of the NC State Construction Office and UNC System Office design and construction guidelines is a plus.
- Ability to speak to public contacts to explain design standards and building code regulations, or appear before a regulatory/judicial body, provide consultation and technical assistance, and negotiate to determine the feasibility of project implementation or continuation.
- Ability to use judgement to make sound decisions that directly impact life, health safety and/or the environment.
- Ability to design and/or review the design of outside consultants and to read and interpret all related plans and specifications.
- Ability to estimate costs, monitor and manage construction projects, and to technically direct others, and review and evaluate their work.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Qualification for professional licensing/registration.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (personal computers, smart phones, tablets, etc.) and a variety of software for e‑mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and information collection.
- Working knowledge of AUTOCAD, Microsoft Office, MS Teams, MS Project, and Bluebeam or equivalent software products.
- Ability to review project plans while developing and implementing best practices in Landscape Architecture and site planning to achieve sustainable and functional designs. Ability to oversee landscaping contractor selection and bid evaluations.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 30 days of hire and must be maintained.
- Out-of-state licensed professionals may be hired, on the condition that they achieve in‑state licensure within 12 months.
- This position’s work may require obtaining additional professional licensure or other certifications in the future.
