Job Description Summary
The I&C (Instrumentation & Controls) Mechanical Design Engineer works within the I&C Engineering team of the GE Hitachi (GEH) Engineering organization. The I&C team is responsible for designing and implementing I&C electronic hardware and software for nuclear power plant systems. This role focuses on the mechanical design of cabinets and cable routing for retrofit applications, requiring strong mechanical skills, technical problem‑solving, and effective collaboration with other engineering teams.
The work location is Wilmington, NC (relocation assistance available for non‑local candidates).
- Deliver high‑quality engineering cabinet drawings for retrofit applications of new I&C electronic system replacements.
- Develop creative solutions and simplify designs to resolve complex engineering problems.
- Create design specifications and mechanical drawings using AutoCAD and Inventor, including cabinet layout and cable routing.
- Engage customers to define scope, review results, and discuss technical risks.
- Work with technical leaders to establish work plans, including time and schedule estimates, requirements, and processes.
- Apply engineering fundamentals and first‑order principles to confirm expected performance.
- Provide clear, complete analysis documentation in accordance with GE engineering procedures.
- Manage time effectively, deliver quality deliverables on schedule, and communicate status to leadership.
- Effectively handle multiple priorities.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 4 years of mechanical design or systems engineering experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar mechanical software suites.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in mechanical drawing/drafting development.
- Position located in Wilmington, NC (relocation assistance provided if needed).
- Access to U.S. export‑controlled information is required; final offers contingent on obtaining U.S. Government authorization.
- Ability to solve technical challenges using common design patterns and appropriate problem‑solving techniques.
- Proficient use of data structures and algorithms.
- Understanding of relevant standards and technology selection to meet desired functionality.
- Leadership experience within or outside the organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A proactive approach to creative solutions and challenging the status quo.
- Willingness to learn new tools, identify improvement opportunities, and promote adoption.
