Job Description Summary

The Radiation Protection Manager will provide technical support and radiation protection leadership for the radiation safety function for the nuclear business, including a commercial nuclear fuel manufacturing facility. You will be responsible for promoting compliance, safety, efficiency, and positive team engagement. Additionally, you will approve changes to the radiation safety program including design criteria, procedures, and training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the site’s Radioactive Materials Program, including Special Nuclear Material, Accelerator, and Radiation Generating Device programs and support continuous improvement
  • Perform audits of all authorized use areas and personnel to ensure compliance with operating licenses and regulatory requirements
  • Provide oversight of applicable portions of the Environmental Program
  • Support the non-ionizing radiation safety program
  • Guide radiation protection and environmental safety technicians
  • Select, develop, and lead Radiation Protection Technicians
  • Oversee training for Radiation Protection Technicians, leaders, and workers at the Fuel Manufacturing Operation (FMO) facility and Wilmington Field Services facility
  • Support shift compliance with EHS requirements while aligning with manufacturing schedule demands
  • Provide planning and scheduling direction, including work assignments, overtime, and training needs
  • Promote Human Performance and Lean principles
  • Advise area managers on radiation protection practices and review/approve operating procedures
  • Communicate business goals, programs, and processes to the radiation protection team, monitor key performance metrics and implement improvements
  • Promote team engagement, accountability, and employee growth
  • Provide technical support for shielding design, ALARA analysis, internal and external dosimetry, and radiation protection instrumentation
  • Review and implement NRC and North Carolina Radioactive Materials License requirements to ensure compliance
  • Support emergency response planning and incident response
  • Maintain Emergency Response Organization qualifications as Nuclear Safety Advisor — Radiological
  • Promote a strong nuclear safety culture
  • Prepare management reports on radiation protection and health physics issues
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering, or
  • High School diploma with NRRPT certification, or five years of experience in an applied radiation protection role at a nuclear facility
  • At least five years of experience in a nuclear facility, such as a nuclear reactor, nuclear fuel manufacturer, radioactive waste site, or radioactive cleanup site
  • At least two years of supervisory experience leading Radiation Protection Technicians
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must comply with strict radiation protection, criticality, and industrial safety requirements
  • Must be willing and able to wear protective clothing in controlled access areas
  • Must be able to walk up and down stairs multiple times per day
  • Must be willing to wear a tight‑fitting negative pressure respirator and maintain proper fit
  • Must complete internal training and qualification requirements
  • Must be vetted as Trustworthy and Reliable and maintain required security clearances for Special Nuclear Material and Category 1 or 2 radioactive material
  • Must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Non‑U.S. persons must be authorized to access nuclear technology prior to employment
  • Must be willing to maintain Emergency Response Organization qualifications
  • Must maintain after‑hours cell phone availability
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to explain technical issues to non‑technical audiences
  • Strong record of resolving technical issues
  • Strong data acquisition skills
  • Experience communicating technical information to diverse audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong project planning, documentation, and execution skills
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in nuclear engineering or physics
