Position: Lead Mechanical Component Engineer - 1

Job Description Summary

The Lead Engineer 1 – Mechanical Component will contribute to a team responsible for highly engineered equipment design of nuclear plant components. Mechanical Component Engineers create and develop design concepts, provide procurement support, and generate drawings, CAD models, specifications, and design basis documentation as required. In this role, the Lead Engineer will operate in a matrixed engineering team to deliver high‑quality engineering deliverables in accordance with customer requirements, business procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines (ASME, NRC, CSA, and others).

The Lead Engineer will work with a global team of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy partner organizations and suppliers to advance the BWRX‑300 plant design and contribute to delivery of BWRX‑300 SMR projects.

Roles and Responsibilities

Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements, including mechanical and/or electrical engineering for all products. Provide direct people‑management responsibility, including staffing and performance development. Utilize in‑depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking to execute policy and strategy, maintain best practices, and integrate own area with others.

Propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address complex manufacturing processes. Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and may lead small projects. Convey performance expectations and handle sensitive issues. Demonstrate ownership and accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy. Maintain open communication with interfacing engineers and project stakeholders. Perform component design work governed by ASME Section III and CSA codes and standards, preparing CAD models, drawings, specifications, and detailed design basis documentation.

Interface with other engineering teams, project managers, procurement, suppliers, and other business functions. Understand component material selection & fabrication processes to create optimized designs and address supplier non‑conformances. Perform independent verification of design work ensuring strict procedure adherence. Work closely with sourcing and manufacturing to support cost‑reduction activities. Develop procedures and identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity. Work with technical leader to establish effective work plans, including time estimates, schedule estimates, requirements, and work processes.

Responsible for equipment requirement specifications and drawings, and evaluation & assistance in selection of vendors. Perform fundamental engineering calculations and modeling. Assess failure modes, causality, and risk in relation to assigned work scopes. Participate in and lead teams assigned to address specific organizational initiatives.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university or college.
  • 5 years of mechanical design experience.
  • 2 years of experience working in the nuclear industry.
  • 3 years of experience performing component design work to ASME Section III standards.
  • 1 year of proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD design.
Eligibility Requirements

Required work locations are either the GVH Wilmington, NC Headquarters, or the GE Vernova offices in Atlanta, GA, Schenectady NY, Greenville SC or Pensacola FL. Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% to domestic and international sites occasionally. This role requires access to U.S. export‑controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export‑controlled information from the U.S. Government.
