Job Description Summary

The Radiation Protection Monitor (RPM) provides radiation protection support for the radiation safety function at Global Nuclear Fuel – Americas (GNF-A), a commercial nuclear fuel manufacturing facility in Wilmington, NC. The RPM inspects and monitors nuclear fuel manufacturing operations involving radioactive and fissile materials, ensuring compliance with applicable licenses and regulations. The role maintains radiation protection dose rate and contamination surveys, audit records, and recommends actions to protect employees, the public, and the environment.

Schedule is not yet determined and may be on the 1st shift or a rotational 4th shift. Candidates must be willing to work on any shift as required.

Relocation assistance may be available for candidates within proximity to the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy site.

• Know and understand the criticality safeguards of the Wilmington Plant based on key documents, the operating license (SNM-1097), and State of NC Licenses.
• Perform visual inspections on both impromptu and scheduled basis of all areas where uranium or activation/fission products are processed, handled, or stored.
• Monitor air concentrations of radioactive materials using continuous monitoring systems, high-volume and special air samples; evaluate abnormal conditions, recommend corrective actions, and document routine and special sampling data for compliance.
• Monitor liquid, solid, and gaseous radioactive waste discharges and ensure compliance with environmental protection criteria.
• Participate in personnel dosimetry programs, managing data and documentation.
• Survey potentially contaminated personnel, equipment, and materials from controlled areas.
• Survey decontaminated personnel and articles; represent the company at local hospitals when contamination is associated with injury.
• Inspect radioactive materials to prevent hazardous handling or unnecessary waste.
• Report potential noncompliance conditions.
• Survey facilities to detect spread of uncontained radioactive materials.
• Inspect the proper use of protective clothing and equipment; recommend respiratory protection when necessary.
• Origin, establish, and document Radiation Work Permit requirements for work involving radioactive materials.
• Inspect, document, and report survey and measurement results.
• Coordinate with engineers and managers in analyzing problems, incidents, or data trends to improve procedures.
• Maintain surveillance of the Criticality Accident Alarm System and notify appropriate persons of component failures or unusual incidents.
• Perform North Carolina State-required surveys and audits of all X‑ray facilities, operations, and the physical condition of radioactive sources.
• Source check radiation detection instruments on established schedules.
• Perform radiation surveys of material shipments and document DOT‑required shipping surveys.
• Participate in emergency situations as first‑line re-entry personnel during criticality evacuations.
• Assist Radiation Protection management with training and qualification programs of others.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

• Pass the business qualification program, including written and oral technical examinations within three months of hire.
• Climb stairs and ladders; moderate physical demands including bending, squatting, and lifting 20–35 lbs.
• Wear protective clothing and follow strict radiation protection, criticality, and industrial safety regulations in controlled areas.
• Exercise mental capability to recognize, interpret, and check written regulatory requirements and work with complex teams.
• See and interpret radiation protection instruments.
• Use computers proficiently.
• Produce above‑average written documentation of survey results and incident reports.
• Communicate effectively with shop operating personnel, supervisors, management, and outside auditors.
• Achieve passing scores on all Nuclear Safety Training per CP 20‑103 and CP 20‑105 within the position’s requirements.
