Project Engineer — $400M Wastewater Treatment Plant | Wilmington, NC Confidential Search | Relocation Assistance Available
Some projects last a year. This one lasts five.
Our client, a well-established heavy civil general contractor, is mobilizing in September on a $400 million wastewater treatment plant in Wilmington, NC, one of the largest infrastructure investments in the region and a project built to run for the next five years. We're looking for a Project Engineer who wants more than their next job. We're looking for someone who wants to build a career on one job site.
Whythis role is different
Most Project Engineers bounce from project to project every 12 to 18 months, restarting relationships and rebuilding momentum every time. This role gives you five years of continuity on a single, high-profile build. That means real depth, real relationships, and real growth, not just another line on a resume.
You'll be paired with senior team members from day one, learning the business side of construction (submittals, procurement, subcontractor coordination, change order management, cost tracking) before stepping into bigger, more independent responsibility. This is how our client builds PMs and superintendents, and this project is the training ground.
What you'll do- Assist Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen in managing, scheduling, and purchasing across a major treatment plant build
- Prepare and track submittals, obtain material certifications, and expedite procurement
- Support billing preparation, change order documentation, and cost analysis for extra work
- Coordinate with subcontractors and build the kind of relationships that make projects run smoothly
- Help optimize cash flow and identify fair compensation for scope changes
- Work alongside safety-first teams on one of the region's most significant infrastructure projects
- A 4-year engineering or construction management degree, or 5 years of equivalent field experience
- Experience with project planning, scheduling, and estimating
- Comfort with AutoCAD, MS Office, Primavera, or COINS
- Water, wastewater, or heavy civil infrastructure experience preferred
- A mindset built for growth, not just task completion
This isn't a hardship relocation. Wilmington is a coastal city with real quality of life: beaches, a growing local economy, and a market on the rise. Our client will help make the move easy, covering house-hunting trips and relocation costs so you can focus on starting strong.
Compensation & growth pathSalary range of $80,000 to $100,000, with a clear track toward Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager as you grow into the role. This project is designed to take you there.
About our clientOur client is a well-established, employee-focused general contractor known for investing in the growth of its people, offering comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k with matching, disability coverage, paid time off) and structured career-based training programs designed to develop the next generation of construction leaders.
