Scope

of Role

Manage the financial and business operations and affairs of the school within the guidelines established by the Head of School and Board of Trustees. Major responsibilities include budgeting, financial accounting and reporting, information technology, human resources, insurance and risk, investment management, and advising the Head of School on all financial matters.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide financial information for the Head of School, School Directors, committees and the Board of Trustees to aid in decision‑making and budgetary control.
  • Maintain clear and timely reporting of the school’s financial position, prepare budgets, and present them to the Finance Committee.
  • Monitor cash flow, transfer funds as needed, and invest tuition revenues in short‑term funds to maximize interest income.
  • Report regularly to the Investment Committee on all invested funds and oversee the 403(b) retirement plan, including the annual audit.
  • Ensure compliance with audits and tax filings (990, 5500) and develop a financial planning model aligned with the School’s Strategic Plan.
  • Manage restricted funds, debt service, loan covenants, agency accounts, and department expenditures to maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Prepare financial reports for associations (NAIS, NCAIS, etc.) and develop revenue‑generating programs.
  • Coordinate the Financial Aid Committee’s award process and negotiate employee benefits and facility liability coverage.
  • Assist the Treasurer of the Board and the Finance Committee with fiduciary duties, and serve on the School Leadership Team.
  • Act as liaison with legal counsel and supervise the Controller, ensuring proper accounting procedures for all transactions.
  • Oversee payables, receivables, payroll, monthly journal entries, disbursement reviews, and the annual audit compilation.
  • Review and update accounting procedures and business office policies to provide professional service to faculty, parents, and students.
  • Manage human resources activities, including employment contracts, benefits administration, and compliance with EEO, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, Worker’s Compensation, ERISA, and sexual harassment policies.
  • Lead technology planning, budgeting, and implementation for hardware, software, network security, and IT staff management.
Requirements
  • Strong accounting, financial analysis, contract negotiation, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Experience in construction project management, employment law, compensation, organizational planning, and employee relations.
  • Ability to collaborate, prioritize, and exercise good judgment while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Technology savvy with proficiency in Excel, Word, email, and accounting management software.
  • Independent school experience preferred.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required in administration, accounting, finance, or general management.
  • Master’s Degree preferred; CPA license preferred.
  • Minimum of seven years of not‑for‑profit organization management or public accounting experience.
  • Proficient in accounting and payroll software systems.
  • Directly related experience or a combination of education and experience may be considered.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment
  • Frequent use of computer, phone, and copier.
  • Ability to work at a sit/stand workstation for most of a business day.
  • Mobility, hearing, vision, and speaking skills sufficient for office and campus work.
  • Occasional travel for seminars, conferences, and training.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and objectively.
