Position Summary

The CST Peer Support Specialist provides person-centered, recovery-focused support to members in the community. This role uses lived experience and specialized Peer Support training to model recovery, promote independence, and assist members in developing skills necessary for stability, resilience, and improved quality of life. The PSS works collaboratively with the CST QPs, Team Lead, Licensed Professionals, and community partners to support each member’s Person-Centered Plan.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide recovery-focused peer support services in alignment with CST service definitions.

  • Use lived experience to build rapport, inspire hope, and foster member empowerment.

  • Assist members with coping strategies, daily living skills, self-advocacy, and recovery planning.

  • Support members in navigating community resources, benefits, and natural supports.

  • Participate in developing, implementing, and monitoring the Person-Centered Plan.

  • Document all services accurately and in compliance with agency and MCO standards.

  • Provide crisis support, de-escalation, and linkage to appropriate services when needed.

  • Accompany members in community settings to promote independence and success (appointments, housing, employment, etc.).

  • Participate in weekly CST team meetings and case reviews.

  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical conduct at all times.

  • Engage in ongoing training and supervision to support skill development and certification requirements.

  • Collaborate with the CST team to monitor progress, identify barriers, and adjust interventions as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • NC Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential

  • Lived experience in recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges.

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and model recovery-oriented behavior.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in community-based behavioral health services.

  • Familiarity with MCO requirements (Vaya, Partners, Trillium, etc.).

  • Comfort using EHR systems

Work Schedule & Environment

This is a community-based position requiring flexibility. Work is performed in:

  • Community settings

  • Members’ homes

  • Healthcare and service provider locations

  • Office settings for documentation and team meetings

Some evening or weekend hours may be required to meet member needs.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, and navigate community environments.

  • Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to drive frequently throughout the workday.
