JobOverview
The Assistive Technologist is primarily responsible for completing Assistive Technology Assessments for individuals who are blind and visually impaired in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Orange, Vance, Wake and Warren Counties. The role supports client independence, training success, and employment outcomes.
Responsibilities- Conduct Assistive Technology Assessments and follow‑up to evaluate progress.
- Provide training on device use and adapt training to ensure client success.
- Collaborate with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech‑language pathologists, physicians, nurses, educators, rehabilitation professionals, industrial engineers, electronics technicians, software engineers, and IT specialists to obtain and share clinical and technical information.
- Stay current with evolving technology such as tele‑care, technology transfer, robotics, software applications, and augmentative communication.
- Troubleshoot equipment and software problems related to assistive technology.
- Schedule and present device demonstrations or conduct outreach and education at community events.
- Support job reengineering, machinery modifications, job restructuring, and technology application for consumers.
- Offer technical assistance and consultation to consumers, professionals, employers, and programs in specialized employment applications.
- Coordinate with employer staff to ensure assistive devices interface with employer hardware and software.
- Follow‑up on job sites with consumers and employers to troubleshoot difficulties.
- Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution.
- At least two years of experience working with assistive technology that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge of disabling conditions and how technology can assist.
- Knowledge of or experience working with people with disabilities.
- Knowledge of working with a team of professionals to help a client meet a goal.
- Knowledge of assistive technology, including refreshable Braille displays, screen readers, and communication boards.
- Salary Range: $41,206 - $72,113.
- Recruitment Range: $41,206 - $56,149.
