It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work- Assigned to Maury Correctional Institution, housing unit in the custody area.
- Effective verbal/written communication with other staff, offenders, and the general public.
- Capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons.
- Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent/verbally abusive.
- Conduct continuous visual/audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Accurately operate office machines and prepare written reports/forms reflecting information from various sources.
- Demonstrate/instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment/supplies.
- Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interview, documentation, and personal observation.
- Perform crisis intervention/routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
- Account for supplies/equipment.
- Implement/manage correctional programs.
- Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons.
- Working knowledge of techniques of supportive counseling and interviewing.
- Ability to gather and evaluate information concerning an individual's past experience, training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
- Working knowledge of correctional programs.
- Working knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
- Ability to develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise a program within the framework of policies and procedures of Prisons.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.
Effective February 1, 2026. The new salary range is $37,377 – $65,408.
This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
Note To Current State EmployeesThe salary grade for this position is NC07
. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase may result.
Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; OR high school or GED diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary special qualifications: must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
