It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work

This is a position at Marion Correctional Institution located in Marion, North Carolina (McDowell County). Marion Correctional Institution is a Close-custody prison housing male offenders. The facility is designed to house a maximum capacity of 793 offenders. Employees in this position carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.

Duties
  • Effective verbal and written communication with other staff, inmates and the general public.
  • Must be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons and work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive, while continuously keeping visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
  • Proficiently operate various office equipment.
  • Prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.
  • Review, analyze and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation, perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.

Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
Documented Knowledge of Supportive Counseling Techniques.

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions.
