Nurse Practitioner Urology Job Description
A Urology Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive system. They work in collaboration with urologists and interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive patient care across outpatient, inpatient, and surgical settings.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Care- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories and physical exams
- Diagnose and manage urologic conditions such as:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Kidney stones
- Prostate disorders (e.g., BPH, prostate cancer)
- Bladder dysfunction (e.g., incontinence, retention)
- Male reproductive health issues
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., urinalysis, imaging, cystoscopy assistance)
- Develop and implement treatment plans, including medications and lifestyle modifications
- Perform or assist with minor procedures such as:
- Catheter placement/removal
- Bladder instillation
- Urodynamic testing
- Assist urologists in surgical procedures pre- and post-operatively
- Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive care
- Provide counseling on lifestyle changes and disease management
- Explain medications, side effects, and follow-up care
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
- Coordinate referrals to specialists when needed
- Manage follow-up care and monitor patient progress
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and clinical protocols
- Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP)
- Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) license
- Board certification (e.g., Family NP or Adult-Gerontology NP)
- State licensure to prescribe medications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) / Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), as required
- Knowledge of urologic diseases and treatment methods
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills
- Excellent communication and patient education abilities
- Ability to perform or assist with urological procedures
- Attention to detail and strong decision-making skills
