American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg position requiring Epic proficiency, charge nurse capability, and a valid NC or compact RN license.
Requirements- Active NC or compact RN license required (may be submitted with license pending)
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Must be able to administer insulin and heparin drips
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
- Previous permanent, PRN, or EP employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler
- Hospital-based Medical Surgical unit serving an adult and geriatric general med/surg patient population with a daily census of approximately 43
- Patient ratios of 1:6-7
- Procedures performed include insulin drips, heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high-flow oxygen, and occasional short-term BiPAC with respiratory support — no additional training required
- No PCU-level patients on this unit
- 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15
- 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
- Assigned to every other weekend
- Charge nurse role is required for night shift travelers
- Preferred experience:
CPI certification and prior charge nurse experience - On-call required for pre-scheduled call shifts
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding
- Documentation and medication systems:
Epic (required), Pyxis, and SBAR communication framework - 13-week minimum contract; extensions beyond 13 weeks are available
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
- RTO is not permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday, and anything beyond 7 days requires facility approval — no RTO changes can be negotiated onsite after booking
- Candidate must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays; no RTO on holidays
- Orientation is approximately 24 hours and conducted weekly; 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are also required
- Travelers are expected to attend monthly unit team meetings (4th Wednesday, January–October; 3rd Wednesday in November–December at 17:30); night shift staff have an additional meeting at 07:30 on the Friday following each Wednesday meeting
- Travelers will be assigned to an Inclement Weather/Storm Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters; unit reassignment may occur mid-contract
- May occasionally care for COVID-positive patients
- Travel pairs are accepted; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Navy scrubs required; scrubs are not provided by the facility
