Job Overview
New Hanover County's Health department seeks experienced nursing professionals to join as Public Health School Nurses. These 10‑month positions provide skilled nursing services to students in the county schools. Duties include identifying and planning for students with acute and/or chronic health care needs, providing emergency care, administering medication, screening/referral/follow‑up, prevention and control of communicable disease, providing health promotion and counseling, teaching health‑related classes, assisting with strategies to improve the school health program, and maintaining school health records.
Hoursand Assignments
Full‑time positions:
Monday‑Friday, either 7:00 am‑3:30 pm, 7:30 am‑4:00 pm, or 8:00 am‑4:30 pm depending on school needs. Part‑time positions may be available with different hours. School location assignments are subject to change. Must be able to report for emergency work assignments during emergencies.
This position works 10 months per year. Full‑time positions are 40 hours per week, scheduled to work 1,760 hours per year. Nurses are exempt from FLSA and do not receive overtime pay. Salary range begins at $29.2995 per hour, plus a competitive benefits and retirement package. Salary is negotiable based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

- Valid RN license with eligibility to practice in NC
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing, and at least two years of professional nursing experience serving in a hospital or health clinic setting
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds of equipment
Preferred:
Prior experience in public or school‑based healthcare; bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
- RN license with eligibility to practice in NC
All candidates must comply with criminal history record check requirements per G.S. 153A-94.2(b) and G.S. 143B-1209.26 for positions involving work with children.
