Scope of PositionThe Administrative Nurse Supervisor (ANS) is responsible for administering clinical operations within The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in partnership with nursing and physician leadership, administrator on‑call (AOC) and leadership of the hospital. The ANS enforces hospital and nursing quality in collaboration with the Director of Nursing Quality, and hospital policies and procedures and supports the professional practice of nursing.
They ensure that patients receive adequate care by managing nurse schedules and interacting with healthcare professionals, patients, and visitors. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of care our patients receive.
The ANS functions as an extension of the leadership team of the Wexner Medical Center, supervising the immediate care of our patients on a given shift, which includes making rounds to all patient care areas. To ensure safe, effective, and efficient care, the ANS obtains reports from the charge nurse(s) and Nurse Manager and is knowledgeable of current patient status. Administrative Nurse Supervisors facilitate communication between nurses and other disciplines, ensuring clear, organized processes are in place for informing staff across work shifts.
The ANS assists with supervision of the staff on the nursing unit while on duty, contributes to evaluation of nursing and clinical ancillary staff, recommends performance action to the appropriate nurse manager including disciplinary actions and/or terminations, coordinates nursing activities with related clinical departments and provides information for staffing needs. The ANS serves as the representative for crisis, emergency, or unusual situations in collaboration with legal and administration.
The ANS complies with guidance from the Ohio Board of Nursing and other regulatory bodies. The ANS promotes the practice of nursing, a just culture focused on safety, quality, and evidence‑based practice, manages risks in alignment with physicians and leadership, and maintains a strong focus on patient experience and staff engagement. The ANS functions as a communication pathway for the Nursing Directors, Chief Nursing Officer and other organizational leaders.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN required.
- Current Ohio licensure.
- Three years progressive hospital nursing experience is required and preferred in administration and supervision.
- ACLS certification preferred or required after hire.
- Clinical certification preferred.
- Strong clinical experience.
- Strong skills related to effective communication, conflict management, decision‑making, critical thinking, and time management.
- Current certification in nursing administration or area of clinical expertise preferred.
- Demonstrated competency to meet essential job functions; maintains knowledge related to patient care issues, evidence‑based practice, quality improvement and cost reduction, current policies, procedures and protocols.
- Current Ohio RN license.
