Position Summary

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine seeks a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD academic Clinical Cytogeneticist for a tenure-track/tenured, fixed-term, or variable track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.

The UNC Hospitals Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory performs both constitutional (prenatal and postnatal) and cancer cytogenetic testing on approximately 4,500 cases annually.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee and direct the day-to-day operations of the clinical cytogenetics diagnostic service.
  • Sign out laboratory cases, including conventional cytogenetics, FISH, and SNP microarray.
  • Conduct technical and analytical troubleshooting and develop new assays.
  • Teach medical students, pathology and medical genetics residents, and fellows from various programs.
  • Engage in ongoing research projects, including those involving next-generation sequencing.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Board‑certified in Clinical Cytogenetics and Genomics, or in Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics and Genomics, or in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics.
  • Training and several years of job experience in constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, as well as molecular methods.
  • Newly board‑certified or board‑eligible individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.
Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience
  • Certification or fellowship training in both Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics.
  • Experience in a combined role in both the Cytogenetic and Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories.
