Position

Correctional Sergeant III (S) – Agency Adult Correction Division COO – Institutions Operations – Position Number  – Grade NC09

Overview

This position reports directly to the Region Security Coordinator in the Central Region Office. Responsibilities include managing and supervising the transportation section assigned to the Central Region, ensuring the secure and efficient movement of offenders between designated locations.

Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and direction to ensure custody, security, and control of offenders during transportation.
  • Ensure offenders are transported to jails, courts, prisons, medical facilities, and other locations while maintaining security and well‑being.
  • Ensure Transportation Officers understand the scope of independent decision‑making authority.
  • Recommend and implement standard operating procedures for offender transportation within the region.
  • Coordinate transportation to achieve timely and policy‑compliant transfers.
  • Oversee officer activities and performance, maintaining custody, security, and welfare of offenders.
  • Develop schedules to meet transportation requirements, implement operational procedures, and enforce rules and regulations.
  • Complete departmental reports (disciplinary, use of force, incident, grievances) within designated time frames.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the assigned area, report irregularities, and initiate corrective action.
  • Ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and enforce safety and security procedures.
  • Report or remain on site during adverse weather events; position is designated as “Mandatory”.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education:

    High School or GED diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III.
  • Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities

    (preferred):
    Documented knowledge of Prison Policies, Procedures, and Facility Operations.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Pass criminal background check, drug screening, medical and psychological evaluations, and possess a valid driver’s license.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary Range: $41,206 – $72,113

  • Full‑time (40 hours per week; may require additional hours).
