Position Overview
Position Title: Correctional Sergeant I (S)
Position Number:
Grade: NC07
Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408
First‑line supervision to Correctional Officer I's in minimum‑custody facilities, assigning lower‑level custody staff to specific posts, overseeing officer activities and performance, arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring that rules, regulations, and policies are followed. Positions may serve as the highest‑ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer‑in‑Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.
Responsibilities- Supervise Correctional Officer I’s in minimum‑custody facilities.
- Assign and schedule lower‑level custody staff for specific areas or posts.
- Oversee officer activities, performance, and compliance with policy.
- Implement operational procedures and maintain security coverage.
- Ensure the custody, security, and welfare of inmates are maintained.
- Report or stay over during adverse weather events (mandatory).
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of facility operations.
- Knowledge of prison policy and procedures.
- High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and at least two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Produce a negative drug screening result.
- Successfully complete required medical and psychological evaluations.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Be able to report or stay over during adverse weather events.
Full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
