The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.
Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
- Serving as first-line supervisor of Correctional Officer II’s.
- Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
- Ensuring accurate recording of worktime/leave for subordinate staff.
- Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Ensuring officers’ equipment is always fully functional and available.
- Serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
- Supervising offenders in restrictive housing.
Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of Facility Operations.
- Knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures.
Necessary Special
Qualifications:
MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Adverse Weather Reporting:
This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
This is a full-time position working rotating shifts with State Benefits.
Salary Range: $39,244 - $68,679

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About the Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
About Pender Correctional Institution:
Pender Correctional Institution is located in Burgaw, North Carolina and houses up to 768 male offenders in a medium custody facility.
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions with the most qualified individuals.

Minimum Education and Experience- High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer
- Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II
