Human Services Caseworker

Overview

The Human Services Caseworker works for the New Hanover County Department of Social Services to assist citizens in need of economic assistance. Caseworkers interview clients and collateral contacts, verify eligibility for Medicaid programs, Food & Nutrition Services, Child Care subsidy, Work First Family Assistance, Long Term Care, and the Federal Marketplace, and process applications.

• Interview clients and collateral contacts and explain the requirements and benefits of relevant programs.
• Research, evaluate and verify resources and information to determine eligibility and re‑eligibility.
• Process applications and compile entry of data into systems such as NC Fast.
• Recommend programs, refer clients to appropriate agencies or community programs, and document findings.
• Maintain case files and status updates in the required systems.

• Zone 1 – Food & Nutrition Services, Family and Children’s Medicaid, Adult Medicaid, Work First – Family Assistance, Daycare Services, and Customer Experience Team.
• Zone 3 – Long Term Care Unit.

• High School Diploma or GED with at least two years of customer service experience in a public contact setting.
• Proficiency in computers and experience using automated systems such as NC Fast.
• Knowledge of eligibility determination policies and procedures.
• Prior experience as an Income Maintenance, Economic Services, or Universal Caseworker (preferred).
• Experience interviewing clients or families.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.

• Must obtain NC Fast Core Functions and Program Area Level 1 Certifications within 90 days of hire.
• Some positions may require a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Zone 1:
Starting at $44,152. Zone 3:
Starting at $46,841. Bilingual candidates performing Spanish interpretation receive a 5% salary differential.

Certain casework positions may offer full or partial telework after a six‑month in‑office introductory period.
