Job Description

Title: Educational Interpreter

Reports to: Team Leader Supervisor

Employment Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications
  • Proficiency/working knowledge of modalities such as CASE, ASL, PSE, SEE, Auditory‑Verbal, Oral Interpreting.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree from an Interpreter Training Program, and/or Ohio State Board of Education licensure under ODE’s Grand parenting Provision, and/or Ohio State Board of Education Temporary Interpreter License.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Essential Functions
  • Facilitates information and communication (auditory, written, demonstrated, or signed) between students who are hearing‑impaired and their teachers, students, and other individuals using the appropriate mode of communication.
  • Is actively engaged in lessons and helps reinforce objectives in all school environments.
  • Encourages students to speak for themselves and to speak directly with educators and peers.
  • Encourages independent socialization of all students.
  • Interprets classroom announcements, programs, and functions during the school day for students, families, the public, and educators in a professional manner.
  • When not interpreting, provides tutorial support, reviews material introduced in the regular and/or HI/D classroom, prepares lesson materials, and uses plan time for research and review of curriculum.
  • Meets with team members as scheduled to discuss academic and communication needs of students.
  • Assists Center HI/D itinerant teachers and school personnel with duties, including supervision of students during arrival, dismissal, movement, and lunch, and routine maintenance of classroom and FM equipment.
  • Works in a timely manner to meet responsibilities and job‑related activities within given time frames.
  • Demonstrates initiative, professional commitment, and independence in meeting responsibilities.
  • Comprehension of Google Suite applications.
  • Responds constructively to supervision and assumes responsibilities for improvement.
  • Participates in all team and center meetings and activities as required.
  • Maintains communication with other center personnel, district personnel, families, and students.
  • Works cooperatively with center staff to complete assigned tasks.
  • Manages time to accomplish duties and addresses competing work priorities.
  • Maintains records, collects data, and submits reports that meet job requirements.
  • Provides required information: caseload lists, EMIS, Medicaid, grant applications, project applications, inventory data entry, mailing lists.
  • Keeps abreast of techniques and innovations through training and professional development; develops an Individual Professional Development Plan if required.
  • Assists in identifying and prioritizing annual budget needs and operates within assigned budget.
  • Follows center procedures for posting schedules, signing in/out of work sites, wearing identification badges, requesting leaves, completing mileage reimbursement requests, and work calendars/timesheets.
  • Completes reports and documents that communicate information clearly and concisely.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follows assigned district’s policies and procedures, including dress code.
  • Safeguards confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Explains center programs and services to school personnel, families, and the public accurately and helpfully.
  • Demonstrates a helpful, positive attitude with coworkers, families, students, and district personnel; maintains courteous language in all work settings.
  • Maintains a personal appearance appropriate for professional responsibilities and client groups.
  • Maintains a neat working area and assists others with housekeeping efforts throughout the center.
  • Follows center regulations to resolve conflicts with other staff.
  • Problem‑solves and notifies appropriate center personnel regarding equipment and supply needs.
