The City of Wilmington is seeking an experienced and dependable Water Plant Operator III to play a lead role in operating and maintaining the City’s water treatment facility. This position ensures the safe and efficient treatment of the community’s drinking water, oversees critical operations, and maintains compliance with state and federal regulations.
This position is a classified, non-competitive role as approved by the Civil Service Commission on September 16, 2025, classifying Water Operator I, II, & III positions for both hiring and promotion.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and monitor water treatment plant systems and related equipment, including pumps, motors, and feeders.
- Perform chemical treatment and laboratory analysis to ensure safe, high-quality water.
- Monitor gauges, dials, and SCADA systems to regulate flow rates and chemical dosages.
- Conduct inspections of equipment and report maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate operational records and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Act as Operator of Record for the water plant and/or distribution system.
- Participate in plant maintenance and housekeeping.
- Be available for emergency call-ins outside of regular working hours.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurability under the City’s insurance plan.
- Ohio Class III Water Supply Operator License required
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in water plant operations or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of water treatment operations, laboratory procedures, and SCADA systems.
- Ability to lead operational activities and ensure compliance as Operator of Record.
- Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills in both routine and emergency situations.
- Commitment to safety and regulatory standards.
- Exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, loud noise, and inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and work in physically demanding environments.
- Classified as medium work per U.S. Department of Labor standards.
- Starting Hourly Rate: $26.36
- Shift Differential: Up to 10% may apply
