Position: Payment Services Clerk I (Temporary Part-Time)

Job Title

Hourly Rate: $19.6507

Job Description

This position performs clerical duties in the collection of fees for all City services. Successful performance results in the accurate and efficient collection of utility payments. The work consists of related clerical duties. Uncooperative customers contribute to the complexity of the position.

Job Responsibilities

Major Duties

  • Collects monies for utility payments, parking tickets, Greenlight, and accounts receivable.
  • Reconciles daily receipts; locates and corrects errors.
  • Answers telephone to respond to customer inquiries and to take credit card payments.
  • Assists with cancellation of service for non-payment.
  • Assists in processing returned checks.
  • Creates batch for remittance system; corrects errors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, North Carolina General Statutes, Customer Service Policy Manual, and relevant city, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Ability to be bonded.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of modern office principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
Work Environment/Physical Demands

The work is typically performed in an office while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
