The Outpatient Services department at Wilson Medical Center provides comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. Our RNs ensure patients are fully prepared for surgery – medically, emotionally, and educationally – and play a critical role in postoperative recovery and discharge readiness. The team collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesia, procedural staff, and ancillary departments to deliver safe, efficient, patient‑centered care.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses patient health status and identifies risks prior to surgery
  • Orders and/or reviews preoperative tests and documentation
  • Educates patients and families about surgery, medications, and recovery expectations
  • Helps plan postoperative care needs and discharge readiness
  • Provides safe, evidence‑based preoperative and postoperative nursing care
  • Implements individualized care plans and revises them as needed
  • Evaluates patient responses and outcomes
  • Collaborates with physicians, anesthesia, and interdisciplinary partners
  • Administers medications, treatments, and therapies
  • Communicates effectively with patients and oversees the provision of care
  • Accurately documents assessments, interventions, and patient progress
  • Maintains equipment, supplies, and work areas
  • Assists with orientation of new employees
  • Supports departmental operations and performance improvement initiatives

Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Associate's degree required)
  • Current/active North Carolina or compact RN license
  • BLS required within 1 week of hire
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to understand, communicate, and respond effectively to patient and family needs
  • Strong critical‑thinking skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining customer focus
Preferred
  • Medical‑Surgical nursing experience
  • Strong competencies in patient education and perioperative coordination
Schedule & Work Environment
  • Varied schedule Monday‑Friday, between 05:30 and 19:00
  • Secondary PACU call required for after‑hours and weekends
  • Personal scrubs required
  • Fast‑paced environment
