The regular work hours are from 8:00am to 5:00 pm, five days a week (Monday through Friday). Night and weekend work may be required in the event of maintenance needs.
Compensation and BenefitsThe starting salary for a fully qualified HVAC tech begins at $57,240 + a competitive benefits package.

Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public buildings, grounds, equipment, related facilities, does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Performs maintenance on heating and air conditioning equipment for all County-owned buildings; repairs and/or replaces HVAC equipment as needed.
- Participates in a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks involving one or more of the trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, welding and electrical work.
- Performs general carpentry in the repair of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows and screens; assists in building, repair and/or installation of partitions, cabinets, tables, shelves, and bookcases.
- Performs maintenance and repair of buildings including such tasks as sanding, painting or staining walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other wooden articles.
- Installs and repairs locks.
- Performs plumbing tasks including changing faucet washers, stems, seals, etc.; assists in installing water and sanitary fixtures and equipment, and repairing toilets by changing tank bulbs, overflow tubes, guide wires, etc.
- Performs maintenance of electrical systems in County buildings and facilities; routes and pulls wiring for telephone and computer systems; repair electrical appliances; replaces light bulbs, receptacles, ballasts, faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators etc.
- Performs maintenance and repair of motorized equipment such as fan motors, etc.
- Performs minor maintenance on power equipment and hand tools including sharpening blades, cleaning filters, adding grease, oil and gas, etc.
- Performs maintenance work on heating and air conditioning systems, checking thermostats, couplers, fuses, belts, motors, etc.; assists in major heating and air conditioning repair projects.
- Performs ground maintenance tasks; mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs, removes snow and ice; plants trees, flowers and shrubs.
- Maintains inventory of and stocks supplies; purchases supplies or notifies appropriate supervisor.
- Performs custodial duties as needed including removing trash, washing and cleaning vehicles, etc.
- Moves furniture, supplies and equipment as needed.
- Performs other related work as required.
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in building maintenance, repair and/or construction work including refrigeration and plumbing trades, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have experience in commercial HVAC and be willing to obtain HVAC license.
Special Requirements- Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
- Possession of specific licensure and/or certification depending on departmental assignment such as Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning, Refrigerant, Fork Lift, Pesticide, Locksmith, etc.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including carpentry tools, mechanics tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, hand tools, etc. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and/or in tight spaces. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal CommunicationRequires the ability to speak and/or signal people to conveyor exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.
Language AbilityRequires the ability to read schematics, mail, etc. Requires the ability to prepare logs, etc. according to prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
