Whirligig Festival among other events. We are in the process of building a downtown field to host a Milwaukee Brewers’ minor league team starting in 2026.

This position assists Summer Camp Supervisors in meeting the needs of Summer Camp Participants for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Major Duties
  • Responsible for planning, leading, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting
  • Opens, secures and cleans facilities and other areas before and after program use, prepares facilities and sets up equipment for scheduled summer camp recreational activities and daily facility operation.
  • Transports, issues and receives summer camp recreational equipment and supplies. Inventories equipment, cleans and maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with maintenance of summer camp facilities, athletic fields, parks and open space areas.
  • At all times, demonstrates professional behavior with coworkers, supervisors, summer camp participants, city staff and the public.
  • Help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, archery, canoeing, Family Night, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  • Communicate with parents about participant's experiences and report concerns to Summer Camp Supervisor.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • If applicable, maintain constant surveillance of the pool area/body of water, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergencies immediately. Attend monthly in-service trainings.

Education/Experience Requirements
  • Skill in the operation of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Have valid First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • A valid North Carolina Driver's license dependent on responsibilities with position.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal recreation programming.
  • Knowledge of the city's recreation programs and facilities.
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Must be able to perform daily tasks which include the following bodily movements: sits, stand, reach, turn, climb, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crawl, push and pull frequently, grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment, and strength to safely perform lifting and carrying of items up to but not limited to at least 50 pounds.
