Position Summary:

The Grants Accountant manages a portfolio of grant projects, ensuring compliance with funding requirements, regulations, and internal policies. Provides fiscal support services to directors, administrators, and staff. This position develops, forecasts, monitors department and program budgets and ensures grant, contract financial compliance, and program funding continuity. The Grants Accountant is responsible for financial analysis related to programs and subcontractors and supports general financial processing, risk reduction, and financial stewardship by applying best practices and knowledge of regulatory/business requirements.

Essential Functions:

Works closely with grant and contract team and subcontractor to provide financial guidance and support throughout the project lifecycle.

Coordinates with program managers to ensure proper and timely expenditure of general, grant and contract funds.

Maintains accurate financial records for grant-funded and contract-funded programs and projects, including tracking contracts expenditures, revenues, and budget allocations.

Monitors spending patterns and budget utilization of sub-contractor to ensure alignment with grant objectives and agency guidelines.

Provides assistance to directors, grant manager and staff in requirements, processes, and related business services.

Communicates effectively with project managers and external partners to address financial inquiries and resolve issues.

Performs general accounting functions such as posting journal entries, reclassing expenses, allocating costs, and supporting month-end close reconciliations.

Performs general financial analyst functions such as supporting projections, forecasting, developing allocation methods, and researching expenses and trends related to grants.

Performs various grant-related post-award functions throughout the grant cycle, such as budget preparation, expense monitoring and analysis, periodic invoicing, payment requisition, financial reporting, labor distribution changes, reconciliations, and budget revisions.

Prepares accurate and timely financial reports for project leads and external partners.

Attends and participates grant sponsored and/or department training and knowledge sharing to strengthen understanding of grant requirements, policies, and tools.

Perform additional duties as assigned to support the department and organizational priorities.

Technical & Functional

Competencies:

Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and practices, financial regulations, grant compliance requirements, and financial grant management procedures including OMB Uniform Guidance.

Working knowledge of federal and state grant requirements, allowable cost principles, and post-award grant management practices.

Ability to effectively manage the financial aspect of contracts and grants as well as understand and interpret contracts.

Ability to act effectively and efficiently under pressure, to work independently and set priorities, and to follow through with all projects and assignments.

Reconciliation and problem-solving skills to investigate issues, identify root causes, and propose corrective actions.

Proficiency with financial systems and reporting tools, including intermediate Excel skills; ability to learn grant management platforms.

Ability to collaborate effectively across teams, manage priorities for assigned deliverables, and contribute to project or sub-team outcomes.

Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to translate financial concepts and compliance requirements to partners.

Continuous improvement mindset; identifies and documents opportunities to improve processes and data quality.
