Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician
Position Summary
With direct supervision from a Lead Technician, Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager, a Maintenance Technician B performs repair and maintenance work on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks, including chassis components, vehicle refuse bodies and control systems, hydraulic electrical, air brake systems, engine work, HVAC components, suspension, drive train and steering systems. The technician may also perform basic tire work such as replacement, tire rotation and tread depth checks.
They maintain a single fleet of state‑of‑the‑art equipment, supporting drivers and servicing advanced vehicles while receiving training in new technologies.
- Maintain knowledge and moderate skill proficiency of vehicle components and systems to perform preventive and repair maintenance onsite and on the road.
- Repair and maintain chassis components, refuse bodies (control, hydraulic and electrical systems, air and hydraulic brakes), light engine systems, suspension, drivetrain, steering and HVAC.
- Perform line maintenance welding and fabrication and provide road service when necessary to return equipment to operation safely and efficiently.
- Identify malfunctions using electronic tools and complete applicable company training programs.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned or apparent.
Ability to diagnose multi‑system issues and demonstrate technical expertise; basic understanding of work order labor time standards; prior experience or knowledge of maintenance work on Classes1‑5 light/medium duty, heavy‑duty Class7‑8 trucks, aircraft, or ships. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications (T1‑T8) and a commercial driver’s license are a plus but not required. Three to five years of technician experience, or graduating from an accredited automotive college/technical school within the next three months.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to perform basic inspections with limited supervision in heavy truck or automotive systems such as suspensions & steering; general engine, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, drive train, diesel emissions.
