Outside Plant Technician

A Day in the Life of the Outside Plant Technician

This is a hands‑on, field‑based role focused on maintaining and repairing aerial and underground coax and fiber infrastructure. The technician will work outdoors daily using bucket trucks, ladders, and hand tools to restore service, perform preventative maintenance, and support network reliability.

• Detect, troubleshoot, and resolve system outages for data, video, and telephone.
• Emergency restoration of coax and underground cable, maintenance of power supply, leakage and splicing.
• Maintain documentation and log work orders and daily logs.
• Participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation.
• Detect, troubleshoot and resolve system outages in aerial and/or underground capacities related to transmission levels, signal losses and off‑air interference.
• Prepare and perform emergency aerial and/or underground coaxial cable restoration due to cable breaks and/or damage.
• Perform preventative maintenance (power supply, actives) — testing, balancing, alignment and adjustments of components or equipment.
• Monitor, record and repair cable leakage, complying with applicable regulations.
• Observe and assist co‑workers with fiber splicing activities.
• Install, replace, and repair coaxial and fiber optic cabling, including aerial and buried plant.
• Perform pole transfers, span replacements, and drop repairs.
• Operate bucket trucks, ladders, and field equipment.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years of hands‑on experience in telecom field work, cabling, construction, or utilities (coax, fiber, or electrical).
• Satisfactory driving record and valid driver's license.
• Strong customer service, communication (verbal, written) and basic computer skills.
• Aptitude to learn new tasks and problem‑solving.
• Time management, teamwork, and ability to work alone.
• Ability to read and interpret maps.
• Bucket Certification and Ohm's certification (if applicable).
• Understanding of Outside Plant operations.

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
• Work in climate‑controlled and non‑controlled environments with exposure to heat, cold, dust, damp conditions, uneven surfaces, heights, and moving vehicles.
• Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and driving required.
• Ability to climb and work from ladders for extended periods.
• Frequent reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs and ladders, and using hands above and below shoulder level.
• Ability to bend, twist, kneel, squat, crawl, and perform fine motor tasks, forceful gripping, and limited keyboarding.

Broadband Network Technician I – $23.15–35.74 per hour.

Broadband Network Technician II – $24.31–35.03 per hour.

Broadband Network Technician III – $25.53–35.74 per hour.
