A Day in the Life of the Outside Plant Technician
This hands‑on, field based role focuses on maintaining and repairing aerial and underground coax and fiber infrastructure, working outdoors daily with bucket trucks, ladders, and hand tools to restore service, perform preventative maintenance, and support network reliability.
Key Responsibilities- Detect, troubleshoot and resolve system outages in aerial and/or underground capacities related to transmission levels, signal losses, and off‑air interference.
- Perform emergency restoration of coaxial cable due to breaks or damage.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on power supply and actives (testing, balancing, alignment, adjustments).
- Monitor, record and repair cable leakage while complying with applicable regulations.
- Assist co‑workers with fiber splicing activities.
- Complete and distribute required documentation (work orders, daily logs).
- Install, replace and repair coaxial and fiber optic cabling, including aerial and buried plant.
- Execute pole transfers, span replacements, and drop repairs.
- Operate bucket trucks, ladders and field equipment.
- Participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2+ years of hands‑on telecom field work, cabling, construction, or utilities experience (coax, fiber, or electrical).
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Bucket Certified and Ohm’s understanding of outside plant terminology.
- Strong customer service, communication (verbal and written), problem‑solving, time‑management, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Basic computer skills.
- Self‑directed, capable of working independently and during long periods on ladders or in varied positions.
- Lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Work in climate‑controlled and non‑controlled environments, with exposure to heat, cold, dust, damp conditions, uneven surfaces, heights, and moving vehicles.
- Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, driving, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, and performing fine‑motor tasks.
Hourly base rate: $23.15‑35.74 (Oregon). Salary ranges for Broadband Network Technician I: $23.15–$32.41, Technician II: $24.31–$35.03, Technician III: $25.53–$35.74 per hour.
