In this role, you'll help maintain and repair a diverse fleet of City vehicles and equipment, including transit buses, trucks, heavy equipment, mowers, and small engines. You'll work alongside experienced mechanics who are committed to sharing their knowledge and helping teammates grow their technical skills.
We're looking for someone who has hands‑on mechanical experience and a strong aptitude for diagnosing and repairing equipment. You don't need to know everything on day one, but you should bring a solid foundation, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to quality workmanship. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe following tasks are representative and not to be considered all inclusive
Routine Maintenance Inspection and Service- Preventive maintenance inspections on City vehicles and transit buses
- Perform maintenance and repair of CNG and battery electric vehicles
- Oil changes
- Transmission services
- Tire repair and replacement
- Light duty brake jobs
- Belts and hoses
- Battery inspection, service, and replacement
- Lighting system repairs
- Interview operators concerning status of equipment
- Assist with the diagnosis and repair heavy duty vehicle systems, including brakes (air and hydraulic), automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, and suspension systems
- Troubleshoot electrical related problems and repair
- Assist with the procurement of necessary parts, supplies, and tools
- Perform service and repair to gasoline, diesel, and CNG fuel systems
- Collaborate with other employees to assess purpose and create design for proposed equipment
- Select appropriate materials
- Cut and shape materials
- Weld materials
- Assist with performing finish work and modifications as needed.
- Input service and repair information on vehicles and equipment
- Assess options of new, used, or rebuilt parts
- Maintain inventory of personal tools
- Assess options regarding purchasing or renting specialty tools
- Procure materials and supplies according to the city and department purchasing policy
- Operate vehicles and equipment as needed for retrieval and repair
- Record information in City Fleet Management System
- Wash interior and exterior of city vehicles on a daily basis, including: windows, mirrors, head and tail lamps
- Dust and sweep interior of vehicles (remove debris)
- Perform scheduled maintenance, including: wash floors, seats, walls, roofs, and other areas; detail vehicles using waxes and protectants
- Perform general cleanup of assigned areas, as directed by supervisor
- Bus stop and Transit Center maintenance, including: perform general maintenance at bus stops, remove debris and graffiti from shelters and signs, and assist with bus stop sign and/or shelter replacement
Complete other duties as assigned.
