Overview
The Facility Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all plant utility systems while managing critical spare parts inventory and leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations. This role combines strong technical engineering expertise with structured problem-solving skills to support equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and improve overall asset performance.
PositionDuties & Responsibilities Utility Systems Engineering
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and optimization of plant utility systems, including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, compressors, HVAC, water treatment, and distribution systems.
- Develop, update, and maintain utility system SOPs, preventive maintenance strategies, and asset care standards.
- Support troubleshooting of utility equipment failures and provide technical guidance to maintenance technicians.
- Monitor system performance, efficiency, and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical support for new equipment installations, commissioning, and qualification activities.
- Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to maintenance, operations, and reliability.
- Assist the Site Manager in identifying, cataloging, and managing critical spare parts for utility systems and high-impact production equipment.
- Assist the Maintenance Manager in maintaining an optimized spare parts inventory by balancing availability, lead times, and cost.
- Collaborate with Purchasing to qualify vendors, secure pricing, and manage long-lead-time or OEM-specific parts.
- Support the Site Planner in developing and maintaining a structured Bill of Materials (BOM) library within the CMMS.
- Assist the Maintenance Manager with inventory accuracy initiatives and storeroom organization (5S).
- Lead and facilitate RCAs for major equipment failures, recurring issues, utility outages, and safety or environmental incidents.
- Apply structured RCA tools such as 5-Whys, Fishbone diagrams, FMEA, and Fault Tree Analysis.
- Develop corrective actions, reliability improvements, and long-term engineering solutions.
- Track and report failure trends, MTBF, MTTR, and key reliability KPIs.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions and verify effectiveness.
- Ensure all utility systems and maintenance activities comply with OSHA, EPA, and local regulatory requirements.
- Support risk assessments, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standards, and engineering safety reviews.
- Promote a culture of safe work practices and reliability excellence.
- Assist with permitting requirements as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
- 3–7 years of experience in utilities, maintenance engineering, or plant reliability roles.
- Experience working with CMMS platforms such as SAP, Maximo, eMaint, or Fiix.
- Preferred experience in manufacturing, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, or industrial facility environments.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical utility systems.
- Working knowledge of reliability engineering concepts and RCA methodologies.
- Familiarity with spare parts management, BOMs, and inventory optimization.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Proficiency with data analysis and reporting tools, including Excel, Power BI, Teams, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong understanding of the facilities industry with an emphasis on mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Proficiency with computers, mobile devices, and electronic tablets.
- Willingness to support non-standard schedules and occasional weekend work.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams during investigations and projects.
- Highly organized, self-driven, and detail-oriented.
- Strong attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to manage large-scale projects, track progress, communicate status, and escalate issues appropriately.
