Position: Co-Op - Optical Engineer (Internship)

Introduction

ASML US, including its affiliates and subsidiaries, develops lithography machines that enable the world’s leading chipmakers to produce faster, cheaper, and more energy‑efficient microchips. The Yield Star Sensor Group in Wilton, CT seeks a co‑op for at least six months focused on optical engineering to support current and future Yield Star products.

Your Assignment

Work on optical engineering projects related to the design and development of optical/photonic sensor systems used in ASML’s photolithography tools.

Key Components of the Position
  • Perform optical design, tolerancing, and modeling using CodeV and/or Zemax.
  • Conduct physical optics simulations (wave propagation, partial coherence, polarization optics) in MATLAB, FRED, CodeV, or other suitable tools.
  • Build and align complex sensors using mechanical, collimation, and interferometry techniques.
  • Maintain working knowledge of diverse optical devices and sensors such as objectives, relay optics, fibers, cameras, and detectors.
Your Profile

Pursuing a degree in optical engineering or a closely related field of engineering or physics. Preference for students enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program; undergraduate candidates with specific expertise in key areas of optical design and systems may also be considered.

Must have experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Optical design and tolerancing with CodeV or an equivalent software package.
  • Physical optics modeling with FRED or an equivalent software package.
  • Optical sensor alignment using diverse alignment strategies and tools such as optical collimators, mechanical gauges, and interferometers.
  • Optical sensor metrology test design and construction.
  • Expertise with diverse optical technologies and devices, including polarization devices, relay optics, objectives, light sources, fibers, cameras, and detectors.

Other Information
  • Position is located on‑site in Wilton, CT and requires attendance at in‑person events, training, and meetings for collaboration and innovation.
  • Typical physical requirements include sitting, walking, talking, hearing, and using hands for keyboard, finger, and handling tasks; stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, reaching, and stretching.
  • Occasional movement around the campus and lifting or moving up to twenty pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Must be willing to work in a clean‑room environment, wearing coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, and gloves for the entire shift.

Additional Responsibilities

Exposure to strong magnetic fields, high voltage, and currents may occur.
