Key Roles

Perform technical services and maintenance procedures to ensure the proper and efficient operation of substation equipment and equipment control units.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs electrical and mechanical tests on all substation equipment.
  • Bypasses, isolates and restores to service all substation equipment.
  • Tests, calibrates and repairs many types of substation equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs wiring on all existing and new breaker stations and tests to ensure wiring is correct.
  • Performs maintenance procedures on all substation equipment.
  • Installs, tests, calibrates and troubleshoots, OCR controls, distribution SCADA, fiber-optic systems, and OCB controls.
  • Programs relays for installation.
  • Interprets breaker failure schemes.
  • Performs data entry from maintenance inspection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Lead tech also performs:

  • Utilizes Power Base management software for recloser control settings.
  • Manages and coordinates recloser testing templates for documentation.
  • Provides support for substation equipment testing, control wiring, and troubleshooting.
  • Provides oversight and monitors contractor activities to help ensure compliance with all related safety regulations and practices.
  • Shall have good analytical capability for investigating root cause analysis with control problems.
  • Directs and coordinates activities to adhere to EKPC's NERC PRC-005 Compliance Plan as it relates to DC battery system ground testing and under frequency load shedding (UFLS).
  • Ability to operate and develop test plans for all high voltage equipment (transformer, breakers, circuit switchers).
  • Provides expert assistance with high voltage equipment testing (doble, micro ohm, timing).
  • Maintains and looks for ways to improve current documentation and testing methods.
  • Demonstrates high level experience in control circuits, scada, recloser control programming, and protection system applications on transmission facilities and distribution substations.
  • Possesses knowledge of the relationship between SCADA systems and relaying with the ability to diagnose and repair problems.
  • Understands relay protection schemes using differential, directional, distance, or communication assisted relaying to provide troubleshooting and technical support.
  • Interprets alarms and annunciator schemes, installs, or replaces wiring in schemes and safely works on live CT and PT circuits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree in a related area or formal electronics technical training preferred.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience with electronical components and electrical related applications required. Experience working in a leadership capacity preferred.

Working Conditions
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license. Must obtain Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Certification. For Lead Substation Technician, Class B CDL preferred, but not required.
  • On-call position; required to carry a company provided cell phone and respond to trouble call on weekends, holidays, and after hours.
  • Overnight travel and non-scheduled overtime a normal part of the job.
  • Works in and around energized facilities.
  • Regular lifting up to 100 lbs. and occasional lifting over 100 lbs.
  • Regular climbing and working at heights on ladders and stairs and occasional climbing and working at heights on structures.
  • Living within thirty (30) minutes driving time of assigned service center is preferred. Certain locations may be considered over others depending on hiring needs.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as appropriate.
