Substitute School Nurse - PRN

Responsibilities

• Collect information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systemic manner.
• Use data collected about the student’s health and developmental status to determine a nursing diagnosis.
• Develop a nursing care plan (IHP) with specific goals and interventions delineating school nursing actions unique to a student’s needs.
• Intervene as guided by the nursing plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and effect rehabilitation.
• Assess student responses to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing diagnosis, and nursing care plan and to determine progress made toward goal achievement.
• Oversee screening and assess health status which includes follow‑up in regard to: hearing, vision, and head lice.
• Serve as a resource person to school personnel, students, and families, through interpretation of health data and assist them to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education.
• Provide emergency and first aid when on site.
• Act as the system first‑responder in emergency situations at the school site and at bus accidents before an ambulance arrives.
• Assist in control of communicable diseases.
• Monitor school compliance with State Health Regulations, including immunization records and entrance physicals.
• Perform medical skills: gastrostomy tube feedings, tracheotomy suctioning, catheterization, and other needed procedures.
• Monitor and help maintain school records: medication records and procedure records.
• Prioritize and schedule work in an appropriate manner and follow through to completion.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Schools or designee.

To ensure the safety and welfare of students and staff, the district requires criminal history background checks and fingerprinting of applicants for positions that require proximity to children. Additionally, satisfactory results from a required pre‑employment drug screen as well as checks with various state/federal registries are required before an applicant is actually employed by Franklin County Schools.
