Work Schedule - Normally Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and until all duties are completed; occasional after-school meetings or events may be required

Department - Student Support

Summary

The Lower School Learning Specialist will work closely with the Director of Student Support Services, the Support Services team, the Director and Associate Directors of Lower School, other faculty members, students, and parents. The Lower School Learning Specialist (Grades K-2) performs under the general direction of the Head of School and the daily supervision of the Director of Student Support Services.

The individual in this position teaches and serves in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.

The Lower School Learning Specialist is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Utilize research-based screening tools to determine a student's academic strengths and weaknesses that will assist students with developing academic goals
  • Utilize research-based educational programs in the classroom with students to assess reading, writing, and math skills
  • Provide direct instruction and support to students individually and in small groups to assist with increasing identified skills deficits in academic areas
  • Refer students, as needed, to the Lower School Counselor to support their social and emotional needs
  • Collaborate with the Lower School Counselor to support behaviors in the classroom setting
  • Support implementation of testing accommodations, assisting with adapting assessments and differentiation in the classroom when requested by the classroom teacher
  • Provide an alternative space for students with accommodations to complete assessments
  • Engage in push-in models of instruction to support student needs in various academic areas
  • Communicate with parents in an effective and timely manner to report student progress on measurable goals following procedures outlined by the Support Services department
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth focusing on learning opportunities that support WT's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness and supporting students with diverse learning needs
  • Complete student assessment reports (e.g., grades reports, interim comments, etc.) in accordance with school guidelines and the deadlines established by the Lower School Director
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for and engagement in the school's:
  • City as Our Campus initiative, actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion, including but not limited to, curriculum, teaching practice, and professional growth
  • Strategic priorities through designing and implementing learning experiences that are interdisciplinary, student-centered, and/or project-based
  • Participate in mentoring program with an experienced faculty member during the first two years of employment
  • Fulfill duties that are connected with non-academic responsibilities (e.g., lunch duty, classroom coverage, supervision of City as Our Campus activities, after-school events or day and/over overnight grade level-trips, and other assigned duties)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education and experience teaching in an elementary setting (required);
    Master's degree in Special Education and/or Reading Specialist certification (preferred)
  • Areas of knowledge required: understanding of learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia; multi-model teaching strategies; strategies for teaching executive functioning skills, such as organizational skills, study skills, and time management; and, utilization of different teaching styles
  • Experience and training utilizing Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading programs or another comparable reading intervention program
  • Understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices for students in Kindergarten through Grade 2
  • Knowledge of current research in learning and the brain, including tools and approaches to support students with learning differences
  • Strong communication skills for working effectively with colleagues and parents as well as the ability to utilize educational technology in the classroom
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively work in group and one-on-one settings
