Position Summary

Stake additions, improvements and upgrades to SVEC’s electric distribution system in accordance with Rural Utility Service or applicable construction specifications, National Electric Safety Code and cooperative policies, and other applicable standards, while achieving cooperative goals and objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Design both underground and overhead extensions (excluding major system improvements and 3-phase projects), revisions, upgrades and other improvements to the cooperative’s electric distribution system in accordance with Rural Utilities Service or other applicable construction specifications, National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code and cooperative policies, other applicable standards and sound engineering practices. For the purposes of development and progression to an FER I position, multiphase line designs and system improvement projects may be performed by an FER II under the observation, guidance, and approval of an FER I, Senior Field Engineering Representative or Field Engineering Supervisor.

    This developmental activity is directed by the Field Engineering Supervisor.
  • Acquisition, at no cost to the cooperative, of rights-of-way from property owners as needed.
  • Accurate completion of staking, summary/material and transformer sheets and other documentation to maintain permanent property records.
  • Acts as cooperative ambassador to members, and the public in general, to ensure timely and satisfactory completion of assigned projects.
  • Responsible for all assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Coordinates and reviews with various district personnel, governmental agencies and other utilities, the design requirements, and the scheduling (up to construction) of assigned projects.
  • Provide and coordinate estimates for members, developers, contractors (both internal and external) and other requesting parties.
  • Acquire necessary permits to complete the job.
  • Assist in special projects as necessary.
Job Related Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in related field of study.
  • Experience in PC applications for GIS, Automated Staking software and other engineering software packages, or the ability to successfully complete SVEC training.
  • 5 years progressive experience in electric distribution design preferred.
  • Notary Certification or ability to obtain in 6 months.
  • Certified as person available to enter (or gain entry) the state of Virginia to rail and quarry facilities.

Skills and Abilities
  • Must be able to maintain professionalism and control under all circumstances.
  • Has and maintains a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record and is able to operate SVEC vehicles.
  • Must become and remain certified in CPR and first aid. Must also be skilled in the use of safety equipment.
  • Ability to handle the challenge of operating efficiently under a very flexible schedule due to the number of unanticipated and unplanned requests for services from the various individuals, departments and outside contacts with whom this position is involved.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a personal but professional manner with members, public, representatives of other utilities, State Highway Department, and numerous other public and private agencies.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and through written correspondence with these organizations and employees for the purpose of obtaining and disseminating technical, construction and right-of-way information.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and produce maps, drawings, staking, summary sheets, job cost estimates, contracts, and advance payment letters and other construction documents.
  • Possess a strong aptitude and demonstrated abilities in math disciplines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Possess effective techniques to research and access all sources necessary to fulfill position responsibilities.
