Job Description
Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Level I Pharmacy Technician accurately prepares and labels medications, fills automated dispensing devices, squad boxes, code trays and replaces floor stock. The Level I Pharmacy Technician fills and exchanges patient‑specific medication supplies, monitors for returned and discontinued medications, restocks storage bins and facilitates requests for re‑ordering drugs and supplies. The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean work environment and communicating in support of Valley Health values.

Responsibilities and Duties- Delivers appropriate quantities to Pyxis stations and ancillary departments, charges for controlled substances using daily accountability records, and delivers all medications in a timely fashion.
- Reviews and resolves all Pyxis discrepancies, reporting unresolved discrepancies to supervisor.
- Determines medication discrepancies by inspecting the MAR form, reviewing the patient chart or consulting with the appropriate nurse; completes cart exchange & flow‑sheets in a timely manner; processes flow‑sheet changes in the computer system with pharmacist verification as soon as possible; credits all IVs as indicated while doing flow‑sheets.
- Communicates workload status to team members and pharmacist‑on‑duty, coordinates work and meal breaks, and effectively communicates workload status between shifts.
- Accurately replaces and charges for all emergency medications, checks expiration dates, logs and secures appropriately, fulfills floor stock requests as needed.
- Restocks storage bins daily and requests reorder of drugs and supplies daily when levels reach minimum assigned amounts.
- Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the department and all work areas; assists in the proper maintenance of all equipment, furniture and fixtures.
- Selects and labels ordered medications for check by a pharmacist, prepares oral adult, NICU and pediatric preparations into unit‑dose packaging as needed, documents all compounding and pre‑packing activities prior to pharmacist check.
- Answers all telephone calls within specified time period, triages calls for technician or pharmacist intervention, assigns appropriate priorities to medication orders; verifies correct supply of medications delivered to patients’ respective floors; screens for discontinued medications, bulk requiring transfer or doses still to be administered; sends tubes to patient floors and pulls tubes when necessary to keep station clear and fulfill designated turnaround times for STAT and routine orders;
manages cartfill, completing process within designated times and facilitates pharmacist QA checks.
High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
ExperiencePrevious pharmacy experience (preferred)
Certification & LicensureValid Virginia Pharmacy Technician Certification (required) or obtain within 9 months of hire, or Valid Virginia Pharmacy Intern Certification (required).
QualificationsMust meet complete competencies and be eligible for training for Level II Technician within 2080 hours of employment at Valley Health.
Criminal background check required.
