Shenandoah University’s Office of Information Technology is accepting applications for a Junior Network Administrator. This is a full‑time position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.
An entry-level networking role responsible for supporting the day‑to‑day operation of the University network infrastructure. The position will monitor network performance, manage hardware and software, and troubleshoot network-related issues. Tasks include installing switches, access points, and servers, and performing upgrades, maintenance and repairs. Will often work with the Help Desk to resolve user network-related issues and serve as a front‑facing contact for the networking team.
PrincipalDuties and Responsibilities
- Support day‑to‑day operations of the campus network to ensure performance, stability and reliability.
- Responsible for ongoing maintenance and operation of IDF network closets and racks.
- Monitor the network using available tools and respond to critical alerts / down equipment.
- Serve as a resource to the Help Desk with general network connectivity, LAN implementations and troubleshooting.
- Act as a lead for the physical installation and replacement of network hardware during times of failure and schedule upgrades.
- Maintain appropriate spare parts inventory including switches, APs, cables, SFPs, etc.
- Establish and maintain vendor relationships pertaining to all facets of network technology.
- Assist with annual renewal of maintenance for all network‑related hardware and software.
- Build and maintain network reports that track system functions, utilization and generate alerts where necessary.
- Create and maintain network diagrams pertaining to the campus infrastructure to support future growth and projects.
- Employees may need to be available during non‑scheduled work time to maintain critical systems.
- Additional responsibilities will be defined and assigned by supervisor.
Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge: Working knowledge of LAN/WAN technologies and infrastructure standards. Practical knowledge of Windows Server operating systems, virtualization and cloud computing.
Should be familiar with implementing user and file permissions, backup and restore functions, and patch management.
Ability: Front‑facing contact for network‑related issues with ability to prioritize and perform in high‑stress situations. Requires strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Education: College degree required. Relevant networking certifications (Network+, CCNA, etc.) strongly preferred.
Complexity: Requires working knowledge in all areas of networking, including networking protocols, VLAN implementations, wireless technologies and cabling standards.
Physical Requirements: May have to climb ladders, lift objects weighing up to fifty pounds, occasionally over fifty pounds, and may need to work in confined spaces.
A pre‑employment background check will be required, and a satisfactory driving record may be required as a condition of hire.
