Summary:

As a Winchester City Public School Non-Transport zone crossing guard, you have the opportunity to safely escort students to and from school. You can develop important professional competencies, such as communication, listening, attentiveness and even problem-solving skills. Whether you are assisting in monitoring traffic patterns or utilizing tools to guide vehicles and pedestrians. Job Responsibilities:

• Develop constructive relationships and good rapport with students and the community to assist in ensuring the safety of pedestrians crossing streets
• Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people
• Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students and ensure their understanding for optimal safety
• Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags and hand signals
• Identify drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number
• Vigilantly watch for impending dangers to develop effective solutions before an accident occurs
• Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street

Qualifications:

Required:

• Must be 18 years old
• Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight
• Keen understanding of local traffic laws (training required and provided)

Physical and Working Environment:

Primary functions will require walking distances of up to 50ft, standing for 30+ minutes, use of hands and arms for signaling, ability to work in changing climates.

Location:

Within Non-Transport zones for Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School and Garland Quarles Elementary School

Salary:

$34 a day/180 days, Non-Contract Pay
