Job Description
The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, identification of outcomes, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. She/he is responsible for quality communication, teamwork, leadership, and professionalism. The nurse also directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and other health team personnel activities while maintaining professional nursing standards.
ResponsibilitiesA Registered Nurse II (RN II) is responsible for the care of the population she/he is assigned. The RN II is required to complete yearly mandatory competencies, any unit specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee, and the Professional Practice Ladder requirements. Responsibilities include assuming charge nurse duties, initiating activity and department initiatives, communicating and sharing information with the Director/Designee and co-workers from unit or hospital committees, attending Valley Health paid education seminars or conferences, and maintaining an up‑to‑date portfolio submitted annually by March 1st.
The RN II routinely solicits and validates patient/family satisfaction, participates in peer review for the unit, and develops educational materials such as bulletin boards or posters for staff, patients, or family members.
Associate’s Degree in Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
ExperienceRequires a minimum of 1,872 full‑time or part‑time hours (936 if holding a BSN) of RN experience and completion of a performance evaluation.
Certification & LicensureRN license required. Must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia under the Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, either with a multi‑state license under the Nurse Licensure Compact or a single‑state license valid in Virginia only.
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) certification prior to completion of orientation.
Relevant specialty certification preferred.
QualificationsMeets all requirements of an RN I.
Competent to provide care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development.
Competent to provide care using the nursing process.
Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital.
