Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN), Triage is responsible for field and following up with all clinical phone calls received in the office from patients, families, physicians, and others.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Receive inbound calls from parents or caregivers seeking advice, information, or assistance regarding pediatric health concerns.
  • Provide medical advice based on established protocols, including advice on managing common pediatric illnesses, administering medications, and caring for injuries.
  • Triage patient symptoms, assessing the urgency of the situation and guiding parents to appropriate care (e.g., emergency care, urgent care, or follow-up appointments).
  • Provide reassurance and emotional support to parents and caregivers in distress.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of phone consultations in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Educate parents on preventive care, growth and development milestones, immunizations, and other pediatric health topics.
  • Advise on appropriate home care, including medication management and dietary or lifestyle changes, where necessary.
  • Answer general pediatric health questions, ensuring information provided is evidence‑based and up to date.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants to ensure appropriate care is given to patients.
  • Escalate urgent or complex cases to the appropriate healthcare provider for further evaluation or intervention.
  • Communicate follow‑up instructions and ensure the patient’s health record is updated with relevant information from phone consultations.
  • Accurately document each phone interaction, including symptoms, advice given, follow‑up instructions, and any recommendations for further care.
  • Ensure the continuity of care by sharing important patient information with other team members as needed.
  • Review and update patient records in the EHR to ensure complete and accurate patient information is always available.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by listening attentively to parents, addressing their concerns, and offering clear, understandable guidance.
  • Maintain a calm, reassuring demeanor, especially when dealing with anxious or distressed parents.
  • Ensure that all interactions are HIPAA‑compliant and always maintain patient confidentiality.
Education
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience
  • (3) years of relevant nursing experience in an outpatient setting is preferred.
Certification & Licensure
  • Registered Nurse licensure is required.
  • Based on primary state of residency and in accordance with current West Virginia or Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the West Virginia or the Commonwealth of Virginia with either a multi‑state license, under the Nurse Licensure Compact OR Single‑state license, valid in West Virginia or Virginia only.
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved required.
  • New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
