Position Overview
The Office of University Communications & Marketing at Eastern Connecticut State University seeks a skilled and creative News Writer/Editor (University Assistant) to support the University's storytelling, news coverage, and public relations efforts. This part-time position is ideal for a strong writer with journalism experience, excellent interviewing and editing skills, and a passion for telling compelling stories.
Please note:
This position requires working on-site at Eastern Connecticut State University's campus in Willimantic, Connecticut. Remote work is not available for this role.
Responsibilities
* Write and edit news stories, press releases, feature stories, and other written content supporting the University's communications, marketing, and public relations initiatives.
* Cover University events, programs, and developments and produce engaging news content in AP style.
* Conduct interviews and background research to ensure accurate, thorough, and compelling storytelling.
* Edit and proofread content produced by student writers.
* Post news content to the University's online newsroom (via the website's content management system).
* Draft email newsletters and other digital communications.
* Prepare news content for distribution across the University's social media platforms.
* Participate in weekly writers' meetings to plan and coordinate coverage.
* Assist with additional communications and marketing projects as needed.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree required; degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field preferred.
* Demonstrated experience in news writing and editing, including knowledge of AP style and journalism ethics.
* Strong interviewing, reporting, and research skills.
* Experience working with digital publishing and communications platforms, including content management systems and email marketing tools. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Constant Contact, and Cascade CMS preferred.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
* Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
* Detail-oriented, creative, reliable, and accountable.
