Part Time Faculty in Environmental Earth Science

Instructor, EES 423 Health/Safety-Hazardous Waste

Job Overview:

Eastern Connecticut State University, Department of Environmental Earth Science, is seeking a qualified, adjunct instructor to teach Health/Safety-Hazardous Waste (EES 423) during the spring 2026 semester. The instructor is responsible for the supervision, instruction, and evaluation of students enrolled in the course. The content taught for the course must satisfy the OSHA 40-hour off-site training requirements in hazardous materials safety standards (HAZWOPER;

29 CFR ).

This position is a semester-by-semester appointment. The course is taught in person on the campus of Eastern Connecticut State University. The course begins January 20, 2026, and will meet one afternoon per week (4pm to 6:45pm) for the length of the semester.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance and direction of the Environmental Earth Science Department Chair, the adjunct instructor will:

* Provide clear expectations of course outcomes to students in the course

* Apprise each student of their performance on a regular basis and provide constructive feedback throughout the course and at the conclusion of the course.

* Specific to conducting 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER training: the course shall provide students with all content necessary to satisfy current OSHA 40 certification requirements such as: hazard materials recognition and properties, toxicology and chemical exposure, air monitoring, protective clothing and equipment, decontamination, and health and safety programs/plans.

* Students who successfully complete the course shall become OSHA 40 certified.

* When and where possible, the instructor should use various teaching methods, including interactive exercises, demonstrations, real-world case studies, and hands-on activities/experiences to help students master the required skills needed for certification

Required Qualifications

* An expert knowledge and in-depth understanding of OSHA 40 HAZWOPER standards, including specific requirements for hazardous waste sites, environmental hazards, and emergency response.

* Instructional experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively teach the course content and address student questions, concerns, etc.

Required Qualifications:

* A current OSHA 40 certificate and clear evidence of expertise in the field

* Master's degree, preferably in a related field or related OSHA experience

* Commitment to the mission and vision of Eastern Connecticut State University

* Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred Qualifications:

* Two or more years of experience teaching undergraduate students

* Additional certifications and professional experiences related to occupational health, safety and training in general

* Experience managing and directing off-campus visits to course relevant health and safety facilities, such that students can see and interact with HAZWOPER technologies currently being used by professionals in the field (e.g., fire stations, police stations, EMT facilities, etc.)

* Experience with a wide range of teaching strategies and pedagogies

* Proficiency in MS Office tools, e-mail, and the Internet along with the ability to quickly learn new applications, including organization-wide information systems and department-specific
