Position: Dual Language Kindergarten Spanish Partner Teacher (Compañeros Program)

Kindergarten Spanish Partner Teacher

North Windham School seeks a Kindergarten Spanish Partner Teacher in our Two-Way Dual Language Program, Compaeros. The candidate should hold CT #902 and #305 endorsements. In times of shortage, Elementary Ed-certified candidates with demonstrated Spanish proficiency and a commitment to becoming certified in Bilingual Elementary Ed will also be considered. The ideal candidate should have experience teaching the multiple content areas usually taught by teachers of Elementary Education and familiarity with instructional strategies used with students learning an additional language.

Candidate should demonstrate Spanish and English language proficiencies and strong knowledge of linguistics and early literacy development in Spanish for emergent bilinguals. Teacher delivers all subject area instruction in Spanish. Teacher is the Spanish partner in a partner teaching model. Teacher is expected to collaborate with both general education classroom teachers, special education teachers, related service providers, and other specialists.

Teacher is expected to plan, instruct, and assess students based on grade-level, content area standards, as well as engage in professional learning activities specific to Dual Language Education and in accordance with the CT Common Core of Teaching and the CT Professional Code of Professional Responsibility. Windham has a large English Learner population, and every Windham school qualifies for Bilingual Education.

Most of our English Learners are native Spanish or K'iche' speakers. Teachers in the Dos Ros and Compaeros Dual Language Programs are members of the Department of Equity & Multilingual Education. The EME Department provides language programs and services to more than one-third of the students in the district. Those programs and services include El Nido Dual PK, Dos Ros One-way Dual K-5, Compaeros Two-way Dual K-5, Compaeros Unidos 6-8, ESOL K-12, and Spanish as a World Language.

Windham's Dual Language teachers receive guidance and coaching throughout the year from Dual Language Specialists and Supervisors in the Department of Equity & Multilingual Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility
  • Ensures safety of students
  • Implements the Windham Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives
  • Manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment
  • Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, uses appropriate techniques, and serves the needs of all learners in the classroom
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required
  • Attends parent/teacher conferences
  • Assess student learning on continual basis and identifies areas of intervention if needed
  • Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Windham Board of Education
  • Maintains respect for confidential information
  • Keeps parents up-to-date of student progress through use of interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences
  • Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed
  • Design clear and specific learning assessments
  • Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner
  • Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents

Other duties as assigned by Administrator and/or Superintendent.

  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement

Qualifications/Certificates:

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
  • Active subject matter certificate as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education
  • CT Certification 305 1-6 and/or 111 TESOL
  • Experience working with a diverse student demographic
