DESCRIPTION

The Teacher aide must work under the supervision of a teacher. Must possess personal qualities necessary to care and work with children, relate to other staff, and relate to parents. The aide will assist the teacher in meeting the day‑to‑day needs of the children. The Teacher Aide is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the age‑appropriate curriculum. Encourage self‑esteem and independence for the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of each child.

Ensure that health, safety, and nutritional education are integrated into the overall curriculum planning. Responsible for the care, supervision, and protection of center children, keeping the classroom and equipment clean, neat, and orderly. The Teacher Aide must have compassion and understanding of the needs of children and families from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Have the physical ability and stamina to interact with children for up to seven hours; e.g., to move and react quickly, to lift and/or carry a child, to sit on the floor or use child‑size furniture, participate in field trips and playground activities, etc.
  • Understand and implement the State of CT licensing codes, Head Start requirements, federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of child development principles through daily interaction with children.
  • Read, write, and perform basic math skills.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Make decisions, organize, and problem‑solve.
  • Work under pressure and respond to stressful situations with a favorable, mature judgment.
  • Exercise confidentiality.
  • Follow directions.
  • Prioritize tasks, work with minimal supervision, and apply oneself as a positive, contributing member of a team.
  • Perform several functions concurrently in a deadline‑driven environment.
  • Ensure children develop sound health and nutrition habits in their daily routines and through modeling.
  • Ensure children's understanding of safety and regulations.
  • Maintain a stimulating, safe classroom environment/playground area.
  • Maintain records as indicated by the supervisor.
  • Adhere to Windham Public Schools Head Start Policies and procedures.
  • Participate in center staff meetings.
  • Participate in workshops, formal course offerings, and training programs, as assigned.
  • Implement learned information from workshop, training, and formal education.
  • Provide documentation of ongoing career development as required by licensing and accreditation.
  • Ensure that the classroom is kept in order, and the equipment and supplies are in good condition.
  • Work is scheduled, and daily attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a positive attitude, establish good working relations with staff and coworkers.
  • Dress and conduct oneself professionally and respectfully.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain first‑aid, CPR, and medication administration certification within six months of hire.
  • Provide current physical (less than 2 years) and negative TB test results (less than 6 months) before or upon hire.
  • Willingness to take on additional tasks, as required by the funding source, to maintain program and agency operations.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS

CDA Credential or enrolled in a CDA credential program

Must be at least 18 years of age.
