Technical Specialist for various Science Departments
Eastern Connecticut State University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Technical Specialist position. Eastern is a public liberal arts university located in Willimantic, Connecticut, and the position offers substantial health and retirement benefits.
Position SummaryThe Science Technical Specialist is responsible for maintaining laboratories and support facilities for designated science departments. Broad duties include preparing laboratories for instruction, maintaining an inventory of lab supplies, reagents, media, instrumentation, and equipment, managing the chemical database, overseeing the use and disposal of biohazardous materials, ensuring compliance with health and safety lab protocols, and assisting in hiring and supervising student lab workers.
- Maintain the chemical database for all stored chemicals to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Liaise with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer to ensure proper record‑keeping and management of hazardous and biohazardous materials.
- Provide administrative oversight of the Vivarium, including animal care.
- Prepare all reagents and media requiring aseptic/sterile techniques for laboratories in microbiology, virology, biotechnology, developmental biology, and similar courses.
- Perform required maintenance checks for autoclave sterility and proper function.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment such as microscopes, micropipettes, spectrophotometers, and similar instrumentation.
- Three years administrative experience in a science field.
- Bachelor's degree in biology, earth science, or physical science with expertise in related laboratory techniques.
- Master's degree in a relevant science field preferred with prior supervisory experience.
- Proficiency in database management and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
The Technical Specialist for the Science Departments is compensated at the Administrative 3 salary level in accordance with the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF).
