Job Description:

This is structure and craft work involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam heating equipment at a correctional facility. Responsibilities include making routine and emergency repairs on heating, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems and supervising boiler operators, maintenance mechanics, and laborers and overseeing and monitoring resident behavior for activities of a resident crew engaged in assigned tasks. Work is performed under general supervision.

Representative Tasks:

• Oversees the operation of a large steam generating plant in order to ensure efficient and continuous production of steam.
• Oversees the work of boiler operators in order to determine work is in compliance with established procedures and instructions.
• Checks instruments and meters in order to monitor the operation of electrical power generating equipment and to maintain operating information log.
• Guides and oversees the work of skilled and unskilled workers in order to accomplish maintenance and repairs of equipment and mechanical systems.
• Monitors and controls resident behavior in order to accomplish assigned tasks and maintain institutional security.
• Supervises and instructs residents working on boiler projects in order to ensure work is accomplished correctly and safely.
• Installs, adjusts, and repairs a variety of equipment such as generators, steam engines, pumps, and refrigeration and cooling systems in order to ensure continuous provision of services.
• Fires and tends boilers on a relief basis in order to provide continual coverage.
• Answers emergency and/or hazardous condition calls and takes necessary action in order to identify and correct the problem.

Knowledges,

Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high-pressure heating plants and equipment such as generators, electric switchboards, motors, pumps, and related equipment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation of high-pressure steam generating plants.
• Knowledge of the mechanical trades.
• Knowledge of supervisory practices.
• Ability to use a variety of tools employed in the maintenance of high-pressure steam generating plants.
• Ability to operate, maintain, and repair plant and refrigeration equipment.
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer specifications for mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Ability to make emergency repairs to heating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Ability to supervise the work of boiler operators and other residents.
• Ability to keep records.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Current valid Stationary Engineer's license as issued by the Maine Bureau of Labor, Boiler Division.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:

Stationary Engineer's license as issued by the Maine Bureau of Labor, Boiler Division. Some positions may require a valid State of Maine Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
