What Does a Production Manager Do?- Lead daily manufacturing operations and drive execution of production plans across all shifts.
- Ensure production targets, quality standards, and takt time objectives are achieved.
- Make operational decisions to maintain takt adherence, resolve deviations, and prevent delays.
- Drive performance management through KPI reviews, structured escalations, and corrective action plans.
- Optimize labor, equipment, and material utilization to maximize productivity and efficiency.
- Plan and execute efficient changeovers with minimal losses and quality risk.
- Support production planning and resource allocation for special projects and changing business demands
- Serve as the production representative during cross-functional operational meetings and coordinate actions with supporting departments.
- Organize and lead the production team, ensuring required competency levels and maintaining an accurate qualification matrix.
- Lead, coach, and develop supervisors, group leads, and production team members.
- Conduct regular shop floor audits to reinforce standard work, safety expectations, and operational discipline.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Champion a world-class safety culture by ensuring compliance with Vestas, OSHA, EPA, and environmental requirements.
- Drive adherence to safety programs, PPE requirements, permits, and 5S standards.
- Escalate safety incidents promptly and lead follow-up actions.
- Drive adherence to quality systems and achieve Cost of Quality (COQ) performance objectives.
- Lead structured problem solving, root cause analysis (RCA), 5-Why/8D, and Kaizen activities to eliminate losses and improve stability.
- Drive VSM, takt planning, line balancing, and standard work improvements to optimize flow and reduce waste.
- Ensure corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) are implemented, validated, and sustained.
- Compile, analyze, and report production data; maintain KPI boards and ensure data accuracy.
- Ensure MES/ERP system execution and data integrity, including correction of booked work and materials.
- Use SAP, Microsoft Office, and manufacturing systems to manage production performance and reporting.
- Ensure inventory accuracy and minimize shrink for floor stock.
- Ability to lead and collaborate cross-functionally in a professional, respectful manner.
- Ability to manage teams effectively and deliver results under changing priorities.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions with limited standardization.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to leadership and cross-functional groups.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 6 years of progressive leadership experience.
- Minimum 3 years managing a production department of 200+ employees.
- Documented Lean manufacturing experience (Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, RCA, 5-WHY/8D, 5S).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and manufacturing software (SAP preferred).
