Are you the person who notices when something isn't right and takes the time to verify it before it becomes a bigger problem?
Do you have hands‑on steel fabrication experience and want to use that knowledge to help ensure every part and assembly leaving the shop meets the requirements?
If so, we're looking for our next Fabrication Assistant Quality Control Inspector (QCI) to join the High Plains Steel Services team.
As a Fabrication Assistant QCI, you'll work as a full‑time member of our Quality team, supporting the QCI by performing and documenting fit‑up and final inspections of fabricated steel. You'll verify work against drawings, applicable requirements, and our Quality and Safety Management System (QSMS), identify and document nonconforming work, and work with Production to correct issues before they travel downstream.
Why Join Our Team?At High Plains Steel Services, quality isn't something we check at the end. It's something we protect throughout the fabrication process.
Our Quality team plays an important role in making sure the steel we produce is built correctly, documented accurately, and ready to represent the High Plains name when it leaves our shop.
Here's what you can expect:
- Quality That Matters - Your inspections directly impact the finished product.
- Hands‑On Work - This isn't a desk‑only quality position. You'll be in the shop inspecting actual fabricated steel.
- Production & Quality Working Together - The goal isn't to stop Production; it's to help Production get the work right.
- Technical Growth - Continue developing your knowledge of drawings, fabrication requirements, AISC/AWS practices, inspection, and quality systems.
- Ownership & Accountability - You'll have the responsibility to identify issues, document them accurately, and make sure uncertainty doesn't move downstream.
- A Team That Stands Behind the Work - We care about what leaves our shop and the name attached to it.
If that sounds like the kind of responsibility you want to take on, keep reading.
This Job Isn't for You IfQuality inspection requires consistency and the willingness to speak up when something doesn't meet the requirement. Please don't apply if you:
- Assume work is correct instead of inspecting what's actually there.
- Let production schedules change your acceptance standard.
- Are uncomfortable identifying or communicating deficiencies.
- Would sign off on questionable work just to keep material moving.
- Guess when a drawing, code, or inspection requirement is unclear.
- Put off inspection documentation until later.
- Apply different quality standards depending on the employee or situation.
- See Quality and Production as opposing teams rather than partners.
- Ignore an unsafe condition because it isn't directly related to your inspection.
To thrive as a Fabrication Assistant QCI, you need to be:
- Detail‑Oriented - Small fabrication issues can become big problems downstream. You pay attention to what others may miss.
- Consistent - The quality standard stays the same regardless of who performed the work or how tight the schedule is.
- Confident Communicator - You can clearly explain what you found, what needs to be corrected, and when you need help from the QCI.
- Production‑Minded - You understand that quality and production are not competing priorities. You help get deficiencies corrected efficiently so work can continue.
- Accountable - Your inspection records clearly show what was checked and what happened when work didn't conform.
- Safety‑Focused - You pay attention to safe work while performing quality activities and address or escal
